If you’re a middle school science teacher or a parent navigating California’s education system, you may have heard about the California Preferred Science Curriculum. But what exactly is it, and why is it considered beneficial for students?
What Is the California Middle School Science Discipline Specific Course Model?
If you’re a middle school science teacher or a parent navigating California’s education system, you may have heard about the Discipline Specific Course Model. But what exactly is it, and why is it beneficial for students?
What Is the Discipline Specific Course Model?
California offers two main models for teaching science in grades 6–8 under the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):
The Integrated (Preferred) Model (the preferred model)
The Discipline Specific Model (an alternative, district-approved option)
While the Integrated Model blends life, Earth, and physical science topics across all three grades, the Discipline Specific Course Model organizes science instruction by subject:
MS ESS1-1, MS ESS1-2, MS ESS1-3, MS ESS1-4
MS-ESS2-1, MS-ESS2-2, MS-ESS2-3, MS-ESS2-4, MS-ESS2-5, MS-ESS2-6
MS-ESS3-1, MS-ESS3-2, MS ESS3-3, MS-ESS3-4, MS-ESS3-5
MS-ETS1-1, 2, 3, 4
MS-LS1-1, MS-LS1-2, MS-LS1-3, MS-LS1-4, MS-LS1-5, MS-LS1-6, MS-LS1-7, MS-LS1-8:
MS-LS2-1, MS-LS2-2, MS-LS2-3, MS-LS2-4, MS-LS2-5
MS LS3-1, MS-LS3-2
MS LS4-1, MS LS4-2, MS LS4-3, MS LS4-4, MS LS4-5, MS LS4-6
MS-ETS1-1, MS-ETS1-2, MS-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-4
MS-PS1-1, MS-PS1-2, MS-PS1-3, MS-PS1-4, MS-PS1-5, MS-PS1-6
MS PS2-1, MS PS2-2, MS PS2-3, MS PS2-4, MS PS2-5
MS PS3-1, MS PS3-2, MS-PS3-3, MS-PS3-4, MS-PS3-5
MS PS4-1, MS PS4-2, MS PS4-3
MS-ETS1-1, MS-ETS1-2, MS-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-4
This subject-focused structure aligns more closely with the traditional way science has been taught—one discipline per year—while still meeting NGSS expectations for inquiry, modeling, and three-dimensional learning.
Why Choose the Discipline Specific Model?
Even though it’s not the default approach in California, the Discipline Specific Model is approved by the California Department of Education and is widely used by schools across the state. Here’s why it works well for many students and teachers:
Why Is This Curriculum Beneficial for Students?
✅ Focuses Deeply on One Discipline Per Year
Students can immerse themselves in a single area of science—allowing for deeper exploration, greater content mastery, and stronger continuity in learning.
✅ Built Around Real-World Phenomena
Each unit begins with a compelling, observable event or question that students are motivated to solve. This sparks curiosity and leads to purposeful investigations.
✅ Three-Dimensional Learning
Students engage in science and engineering practices (like analyzing data and building models), develop crosscutting concepts (like cause and effect), and gain core disciplinary knowledge—all at once.
✅ Supports Diverse Learners
Curriculum materials approved for this model often include scaffolds for English language learners, visual supports, and leveled texts, ensuring all students can participate meaningfully.
✅ Encourages Hands-On, Student-Driven Learning
Rather than lecture-heavy instruction, students work through investigations, simulations, collaborative discussions, and writing tasks that mirror how scientists actually work.
✅ Clear Grade-Level Progression
Because each year focuses on a different field, students and teachers benefit from a clearly defined structure:
In Grade 6, students investigate Earth’s systems, weather and climate, natural hazards, and the solar system.
In Grade 7, life science takes center stage, with units on cells, body systems, reproduction, natural selection, and ecosystems.
In Grade 8, students dive into physical science topics such as forces, energy, waves, matter, and chemical reactions.
Final Thoughts
If your school follows the Discipline Specific Course Model, you don’t have to start from scratch. I’ve already created engaging, student-friendly resources for each grade level, aligned to the NGSS and designed to support this model.
