The following day, the corridors of Havenwood High buzzed with the usual chatter, but Alex couldn’t focus on the mundane conversations about homework and the upcoming school dance. The map lay folded in his pocket, its secrets burning like a beacon calling to him.
As soon as the final bell rang, Alex bolted. He didn’t stop at his locker, didn’t wave to his friends; he had a destination in mind. The map’s line led directly into the old forest that bordered the town, a place of whispered legends and childhood dares.
The forest greeted Alex with a hush, the sound of the town fading behind him. The air grew cooler under the canopy of ancient trees, and the path became less clear, more rugged. Still, Alex pressed on, guided by the map’s unerring line.
Hours passed, and the light began to fade. Alex knew he should head back, but the promise of the mysterious X was too compelling. And then, suddenly, the ground gave way beneath his feet.
Alex tumbled into darkness, the map flying from his grasp. He landed with a thud on a bed of soft moss. Dazed but unharmed, he looked up. He had fallen through a camouflaged pit into what appeared to be a cavern.
Scrambling for the map, Alex’s fingers brushed against a cold, metallic object. It was a locket, old and adorned with a strange crest, half-buried in the moss. As Alex picked it up, the cavern walls began to tremble, and a low rumble echoed through the chamber.
Was he alone? Or had he awoken something that lay dormant in the depths?
A shadow moved at the edge of his vision. Alex turned, and the last sliver of light from above disappeared as something, or someone, covered the opening he had fallen through.
Trapped underground with a potentially ancient secret, what will Alex do next?
