How will teaching with the 5E model help you and your students?
They allow students to get hands-on and actually do things instead of just listening
- The 5E’s push students to apply what they’ve learned to new situations
- They emphasize inquiry, critical thinking, and the process of science
- They are scientifically backed
- They’re definitely not boring!
- Because they’re awesome!
- They facilitate success by scaffolding student understanding
- They promote learning in a progressive, step-wise manner (A –> B –> C)

Why is scaffolding so important
It takes a complicated concept and teaches it in a step-wise fashion
This is what comes to mind for many students when they think of science
Everyone who knows me knows I’m not very good at drawing. To help, I use this YouTube channel called How to Draw that walks me through step-by-step.
Eventually, I ended up with this. Not bad for me
Why is scaffolding important in 5E lessons?
- Creates engagement
- Reduces anxiety
- Provides support
- Produces momentum
What are the 5E’s? Engagement
- Creates interest and excitement for your students
- Asks questions and probes their initial conceptions
- Mine generally consist of a short video with probing question or a quick activity which leads into a discussion based around current events, common misconceptions, etc.
Here’s an example video included in my Earth’s Seasons 5E lesson. Click to watch.
What are the 5E’s? Exploration
- Students use and develop creative thinking skills, make observations, record results, and make connections
- In my 5E lessons, students get out of their seats and complete a 7-station, Lab Activity
- Each station is different and requires few if any preparation or materials
If you like the idea of using the 5E’s in your classroom, I’d like to offer my bundle at 50% off. Just fill in your name and email below and I’ll be in touch shortly.

What are the 5E’s? Explanation
- This is a lesson part
- Students develop understanding of the content, discuss ideas and learn the vocabulary
- All my lessons come in PowerPoint and .PDF formats and include videos and simulations linked right into the slides
- Each lesson also includes a student and teacher version to keep your kids focused
What are the 5E’s? Elaborate
- Students complete an activity or assignment that forces them to expand their thinking and knowledge
- Propose solutions to new situations
- Many of my 5E lessons contain a scavenger hunt which are really cool – think of regular scavenger hunts on steroids, like WWE steroids
- Other examples include mapping a route with vectors (physics), science articles with extension questions, research projects, etc.
What are the 5E’s? Evaluate
- Students demonstrate their understanding and have their progress evaluated
- The evaluation may include homework questions, a science article reading, quiz, etc.
- Although there are many opportunities to assign grades in my 5E lessons, the Evaluate portion definitely will
Evidence – In order to learn effectively
- Students must be interested and engaged in what they are learning and find it useful and meaningful
- Students must be actively involved in the process of teaching and learning
- Students need opportunities to apply what they have learned to new situations, to check the completeness of their understanding, and to evaluate their own learning for themselves.
