Enzymes are very important to the functioning of living things. They allow chemical reactions to occur at a rate that would be unobtainable if they weren’t present. Without enzymes, we could not survive; the reactions inside our bodies simply couldn’t perform fast enough. To ensure our enzymes can continue to function, our blood pH is kept in a very narrow range around 7.4. What would happen to our enzymes if our blood pH moved too far away from its optimal levels?
